My research program has spanned a wide range of topics that pertain to sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and sensory-guided motor processing. More specifically, my research and publications have focused on the tactile psychophysics of texture (real and virtual), haptic and multisensory processing of objects and their properties, haptic space perception, and the sensory-guided control of grasping. Bergmann Tiest, Astrid M. L. Kappers. The BioTac® is a biomimetic tactile sensor for grip control and object characterization. It has three sensing modalities: thermal flux, microvibration and force. In this paper, we discuss feature extraction and interpretation of the force modality data. The data produced by this force sensing modality during sensor-object interaction are monotonic but non-linear.

A tactile sensor is a device that measures information arising from physical interaction with its environment. Tactile sensors are generally modeled after the biological sense of cutaneous touch which is capable of detecting stimuli resulting from mechanical stimulation, temperature, and pain (although pain sensing is not common in artificial tactile sensors).

Task-Driven Extraction of Object Contour by Human Haptics: Part 2 The book examines how sensory and motor function develops in the hand from birth to old age, and how the specific end effector. The extraction of contour information from objects is essential for purposes of grasping and manipulation.

We proposed that human haptic exploration of contours, in the absence of vision, would. Haptic interfaces are devices that enable manual interaction with virtual environments (VEs) or teleoperated remote systems.

They are employed for tasks that are usually performed using hands in the real world, such as manual exploration and manipulation of objects. The nature of stereotypical classes of manual exploration (“exploratory procedures”) are examined, and further considered in terms of their constraints on property extraction.

These initial empirical results have been used to develop a conceptual model of human haptic object processing (Klatzky & Cited by: 1. Lester Sultatos, in xPharm: The Comprehensive Pharmacology Reference, Drug absorption is the movement of a drug from its site of application into the bloodstream.

Humans utilize tactile and haptic information to determine object properties using thousands of mechanoreceptors located in the hands.

Various haptic illusions can also be created by Extraction of Haptic properties book vibration and/or deformation to tactile mechanoreceptors. This chapter describes the state-of-the-art in wearable haptic display devices.

Haptic rendering of compliance is widely used in human–computer haptic interaction. Haptic impressions of virtual objects are usually controlled through rendering algorithms and devices. However, subjective feelings of compliance are easily affected by physical properties of objects, interactive modes, and so on.

So it is important to ascertain the mapping relations between controlled Author: Zhiyu Shao, Juan Wu, Qiangqiang Ouyang, Cong He, Zhiyong Cao. Robotic Learning of Haptic Adjectives Through Physical Interaction Vivian Chua,1, Ian McMahona,1, Lorenzo Rianob,1, Craig G.

In recent years, wearable haptic systems (WHS) have gained increasing attention as a novel and exciting paradigm for human–robot interaction (HRI).

These systems can be worn by users, carried around, and integrated in their everyday lives, thus enabling a more natural manner to deliver tactile cues.

Chapter 03 - Telemedicine for the Battlefield: Present and Future Technologies Pablo Garcia Abstract - Providing medical care in the field is very challenging because of the limited availability of medical resources.

The current practice in military operations is to stabilize patients far forward and evacuate them to better equipped medical facil ities, such as combat field hospitals. Haptic technology, which engages the sense of touch, offers promising benefits for a variety of interactions including low-attention displays, emotionally-aware interfaces, and augmented media experiences.

Despite an increasing presence of physical devices in commercial and research applications, there is still little support for the design of engaging haptic sensations.
